Should I Apply a Hair Mask to My Scalp or Only the Lengths?
Short answer: Apply a hair mask to your mid-lengths and ends, not your scalp, unless the product is specifically designed as a scalp treatment. Your scalp already produces natural oil, so adding a rich mask there tends to leave roots looking greasy rather than helping - the driest, most damage-prone part of your hair (the lengths and ends) is where a mask actually does its job.
Why Lengths and Ends, Not Roots
Hair gets progressively drier the further it is from the scalp, since natural oil (sebum) coats hair near the roots but rarely travels all the way to the ends on its own. That means:
- Roots/scalp: usually already moisturised by natural oil - adding more from a mask just sits on top, weighing hair down and making it look oily sooner after washing.
- Mid-lengths to ends: the oldest, most exposed, and typically driest part of the hair - this is where a mask's moisture and repair benefits are actually needed and put to use.
The One Exception: Dedicated Scalp Treatments
If your scalp itself is dry, flaky, or itchy, that's a different product and technique - a scalp treatment, not a hair mask. Scalp treatments are usually lighter, applied directly to the scalp with fingertip massage, left on for a shorter, specified time, and rinsed out with shampoo. Don't substitute your regular lengths-and-ends hair mask for this - check the product label, since some are formulated and intended specifically for scalp use.

How to Apply It Correctly
- Shampoo first, then towel-dry until damp (not dripping).
- Starting from about ear-level down, apply the mask through mid-lengths to ends.
- Comb through with a wide-tooth comb for even coverage.
- Leave on for the time your product recommends (commonly 15–30 minutes).
- Rinse thoroughly - incomplete rinsing is a common reason hair feels weighed down afterward.
